Frequently Asked Questions
How is my typing speed (WPM) calculated?
WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. Five characters count as one word — the long-standing standard. Only characters you typed correctly count toward WPM; every keystroke counts toward Raw WPM. The full definitions are on the Scoring Methodology page.
What is a good typing speed?
About 40 WPM is a commonly reported adult average. 50–60 WPM is comfortable for most office jobs, and 70+ WPM is fast. Accuracy matters as much as speed — a fast test full of errors is not fast work.
Is this typing test free?
Yes — completely free, with no signup and no limit on how many tests you take.
Do I need an account?
No. Your settings and result history are stored in your own browser, on your device. Nothing you type is uploaded.
Can I practise with my own text?
Yes. Choose the Custom text type, paste or type up to 5,000 characters, and take the test on your own material. It is processed locally in your browser and never stored on a server.
Why did my score show 0 WPM?
If uncorrected mistakes are more than your correct characters, WPM shows 0 with an explanation. It is an honesty rule: error-filled typing is not productive speed. Slow down slightly, fix errors as you go, and the score climbs quickly.
What happens if I switch tabs during a test?
The attempt is stopped and does not count. Timed scores are only meaningful if the test runs in one sitting.
Does the test work on a phone?
Yes — it is built mobile-first. Tap the typing box, and your on-screen keyboard opens. A physical keyboard gives a more realistic score, but it is never required.
