Why one minute is the standard

One minute is the standard typing test length used by schools and employers. This test is set to 60 seconds — start typing when you are ready.

Sixty seconds is long enough to cancel out a lucky or unlucky start, and short enough to repeat several times in one sitting. That is why most typing benchmarks — including the commonly reported average of about 40 WPM for adults — are based on the one-minute test.

The secret to a good one-minute score is a steady rhythm rather than a sprint: typists who start at a pace they can hold usually finish with a higher net WPM than typists who rush and collect errors. Watch the per-second graph in your result — a flat line beats a spike.
